Eid-ul-Fitr 2026: Federal Government Declares Thursday and Friday as Public Holidays

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr across the country.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, 2026 as national public holidays, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr across the country.

A Message of Unity

The Minister of Interior, in a statement issued on behalf of the Federal Government, extended warm Eid greetings to all Nigerian Muslims and called on citizens of all faiths to use the occasion to reflect on themes of peace, unity, and compassion.

"Eid-ul-Fitr is a celebration not only for our Muslim brothers and sisters, but for all Nigerians. It is a reminder of our shared values of generosity, community, and faith," the statement read.

Security Measures for the Celebration

In light of the recent security incidents in the northeast, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigerian Army announced heightened security deployments across the country for the Eid celebrations. All major mosques, prayer grounds, and public gathering points will have security personnel present.

The Inspector General of Police called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to security agencies.

Eid and the Economy

The Eid holiday period typically sees a significant surge in retail trade, transportation, and hospitality activity across Nigeria. Economists estimate that consumer spending during the Eid period contributes billions of naira to the informal economy, particularly in northern states where the festival is most widely celebrated.

Insight wishes all Nigerian Muslims <strong>Eid Mubarak! May this season bring peace, prosperity, and renewed hope to every household across our great nation.
